Best Earplugs for Concerts

We’re willing to bet that when it comes to protecting your hearing, you’re serious with the products you choose.

So are we. That’s why we uncovered ear plugs that can help you get the best and most protected concert experience.

Because there are literally thousands of earplugs out there, our team spent a collective total of more than 40 hours on our research.

In order to determine the best earplugs for concerts, we judged each on price, the materials used, whether the earplugs are hypoallergenic, customers’ input on comfort during wear, decibel reduction and more.

It can be difficult to determine exactly how many decibels a given earplug set will reduce. For that reason we relied not just on manufacturer’s data but on real customer input.

Below are our favorite earplugs to protect your ears for concerts per our research results. We’ve listed the reasons each was included so you can decide whether one of these brands is just right for you.

Why Choose High-Quality Earplugs for Concerts?
Before we reveal the best earplugs for concerts, you may wish to know why you need to invest in a pair. Perhaps you’re rarely in high-noise environments and feel your hearing couldn’t possibly be affected. Or you may think, “Concerts aren’t that loud. I’m used to high volume music by now.”

The reality is that any very high-decibel (dB) sound can damage your hearing. And in some cases, that damage might be permanent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, permanent hearing loss is generally caused by repeated exposure. But your hearing might also be damaged by just one very loud, very close sound; a firecracker going off nearby, for instance.

That means there’s never really a “safe” time to go without earplugs in a very loud environment.

Hearing Loss Can Creep Up on You
Doctors agree that hearing loss might be unnoticeable at first. You may gradually begin to ask people to speak up, especially in crowded environments. Or you might start turning the TV volume higher and higher, much to the annoyance of family members or roommates.

Some people never notice their own hearing loss until someone else brings it up to them. Or you may experience the typical progression, with only highest and lowest frequencies being hard to hear.

The problem is that those first signs – whether you notice them or not – mean there’s some degree of damage already occurring.

Young People Can Have Hearing Loss, Too
One other fact to keep in mind is that you don’t have to be a certain age to have low–level or moderate hearing loss.

A 2007 report from the National Institutes of Health’s Deafness sector has shown that nearly one-fourth of U.S. adults age 20-69 may have noise-induced hearing loss.

You Can Protect Your Hearing Health
Luckily, protecting your hearing might slow the progression of hearing loss. And if you have no hearing damage yet, you may be able to avoid this issue for a long time to come, even if you’re regularly in noisy environments.

The answer is to protect your hearing every time you’re in a very high-dB environment. Science has come up with some innovative and very effective ways of allowing you to still hear the sounds you need and want to hear, while filtering out the impact of damaging decibels.

We were thrilled to see that some of that technology has made its way to the private or commercial sectors. By scouring thousands of verified customer reviews and hundreds of top-rated items, we came up with the 17 best earplugs for concerts below. Read on to find the perfect pair of earplugs.

Buyer’s Guide
There’s an amazing variety of earplugs on the market today. That’s because people’s needs differ. Here are some facts you should know, including the shape, materials, and why you might want to choose one type over the other.

Wax Earplugs
Yes, these still do exist. They were very popular at one time due to their ability to conform exactly to the ear canal. However, wax does have its drawbacks.

For one thing, if reused, wax can be very unsanitary. For another, small bits of wax may get stuck in the ear canal, even if you remove the earplugs carefully. A small bit of wax will coat the ear canal and will attract dust, hair and possibly, bacteria.

While it’s ultimately up to you, we didn’t include any wax earplugs in our Best Earplugs list. However, do know they’re out there and you can try them if you wish.

Foam Earplugs
Foam earplugs first entered the market in the 1970s. Foam is the preferred material for blocking noise while sleeping, working in a busy environment where you need to concentrate, or for reading or studying in loud places, such as on the train or in a coffee shop. The reason is that foam allows a little sound to get through so you’re alerted to alarms, your phone, or dangerous situations. Meanwhile, they muffle louder noises so you’re less distracted.

Disposable foam earplugs are your best choice so that you maintain hygienic conditions inside the ear.

Silicone Earplugs
Silicone represents the most recent evolution in earplug materials. Silicone great as it resists bacteria growth, lasts a long time, and is generally soft and pliable. That means it’s very comfortable to wear inside the ear, even for extended periods.

Today’s silicone earplugs really are a step up from previous styles. Many formulations of silicone allow ranges of sound (such as music) while blocking intrusive and potentially damaging noise. They’re a great choice if you attend music concerts, work in an environment where sound exceeds 75 decibels, or engage in loud hobbies like motorcycle riding or car racing.

Moldable Ear Plugs
Moldable earplugs are great because they conform to the shape of your outer ear canal. A good fit provides a good seal against sound, it also makes wearing the earplug more comfortable.

Several earplug materials are moldable. One type is wax. As we mentioned above, we don’t generally recommend this type of material, but it is actually the most moldable and malleable type of earplug you can buy. Foam can be temporarily moldable; it expands to fill the outer ear canal, then goes back into its original shape when removed. Many silicone formulations will also mold slightly to your shape. Check for this feature before buying.

Flanged Plugs
Flanged earplugs have a ridge or rim for extra strength. Usually they’re an elongated gumdrop shape or a “Christmas tree” shape. They’re perfect because the part you’re gripping to remove is tougher and more resistant to rips and tears.

It’s not absolutely necessary to buy earplugs that are flanged, but it’s a nice feature to have, especially if you wear your earplugs frequently.

Why Some Earplugs are Better for Sleeping
Different earplugs perform different functions. While you’re sleeping, it doesn’t matter if sound is muffled. In fact, that’s the goal. Foam earplugs are generally best for accomplishing this.

Hard, high-pitched or very loud sounds are the most disturbing to your sleep. Foam gentles all of these sounds but still allows urgent noises, like your phone or a child crying, to be detected.

Because you’re not using your earplugs to protect the ears from high decibel noise, you don’t need as tight a sound seal. A good fit is still important, but you won’t necessarily need very malleable/moldable earplugs for sleeping unless any sound at all bothers you while you’re trying to sleep.

Why Some Earplugs are Better for Concerts
The point of a music concert is to hear the music and, if you’re the artist, to sing or play an instrument. Both of these activities require sensitivity to variations in the music. Earplugs that completely block sound aren’t what you’re looking for in this case. Instead, you want earplugs that allow you to hear what you came for.

Silicone is usually best for this. The newer generation of silicone materials distribute sound evenly while muting it enough to protect your eardrums. The result is the ability to hear nuances of the music without the sound level being harmful.

A good seal is very important if you’re wearing your earplugs at concerts. Make sure the earplugs you buy are shaped ergonomically and are made of silicone that will temporarily mold to your ear’s shape.

Other Loud Environments
The type of earplugs you choose will depend upon just how loud the ambient sound will be. For example, NASCAR and monster truck shows can seriously impact your eardrums. So can work situations where certain equipment such as jackhammers are used.

If you’ll be in any environment where you expect the sound level to exceed 75 decibels, choose earphones that are rated at least 29 or preferably up to 32 on the NRR (noise reduction rating) scale.

When You’re Ready to Buy Your Earplugs
Whether you need your earplugs for sleeping or for loud environments, there are a few factors you’ll want to keep in mind. Here are the most important things to check out.

Comfort is Key
We believe comfort is number one on the list of must-haves when you’re choosing earplugs. And the customers we reviewed felt exactly the same way. If you’ve ever struggled in the night with earplugs that fell out or put pressure on the inside of your ears, you know exactly what we mean.

Look for comfortable materials such as the latest generation of polyurethane foams. They should be smooth (non-scratchy) and if you’re sensitive. One shape may work well for you while another doesn’t. Try out different types (bell, flange, T, etc.) to find your personal favorite.

Make Sure They Conform to Your Ear’s Shape
Like anything else on the human body, ear canal shapes differ from person to person. Look for earplugs that can be twisted or gently compressed to fit into the ear, then expand slightly to your own ear’s shape.

This is important not only for your comfort but to form a good seal against intrusive noises. This feature should also ensure that the earplugs won’t fall out at night when you roll over.

Don’t Force the Issue
No matter how fantastic the ratings are, you may find that the earplugs you’ve chosen are simply a bad fit. Don’t fuss with earplugs that fall out or, worse, try to make oversized or uncomfortable earplugs fit. Make sure you buy your earplugs from sellers who offer a money-back policy.

Conclusion
It’s amazing how much science goes into the perfect pair of earplugs. Luckily, we’ve done the work of finding the best-of-the-best for you.

Whether you need earplugs for sleeping, for concerts, or for other environments where you need sound to be diminished, always shop quality plus value. Both are important so that you can (wait for it) rest easy.

We hope we’ve been a help in finding that great pair of earplugs for your needs. Protecting your hearing and your quality of sleep are equally important. Make the right investment in great earplugs now for a happy and healthy future.
